Good Morning!

Brrrr!

What a difference a week makes! Last we spoke, we were still enjoying warm weather here in beautiful Northern Idaho. The leaves were starting to change, but this was a much milder fall than usual — no hard freezes!

And now …

(A pause: Where’s my flannel?!?)

Um, let’s just say it’s decidedly gray and wet outside. With lots more of that to come.

And that means two things:

1) It is TIME to finish preparing the GARDEN for winter!

In last week’s pantry chat, we talked all about winterizing your general homestead.

Today, we’ll tell you all about how to put the garden itself to bed. Aside from building great soil, preserving your tools, and getting organized, taking this critical step is THE key to giving next year’s garden a big boost!

And…

2) It’s time to WARM UP — with Josh’s new favorite meal!

Josh cannot stop talking about Carolyn’s new Green Tomato Chili recipe, featured in the latest edition of our magazine, In the Homestead Kitchen. This is SERIOUSLY good stuff – it brightens up hum-drum chili like nothing you’ve ever tasted!

Get the recipe (and dozens more in our digital magazine library) and watch your family RAVE!

And don’t forget to learn EXACTLY how we put our garden to bed for winter in this week’s Pantry Chat. You’ll thank yourself in the spring!

How to Can DOZENS of Jars of Food in ONE DAY — AND Be Cheerful AND Eat an Easy, Delicious Dinner!

No, that’s not a fantasy … it just HAPPENED, right here in our kitchen!

If you missed Saturday’s video, then I hope you click on over and see how doable it is to get in a successful day of canning and stay well-fed and rested.

It’s all in the preparation.

Join me in my home kitchen as I walk you through EXACTLY how my friends and I preserved dozens and dozens of jars of delicious Plum Jelly … and managed to stay friends. (Just kidding! We had a ball.)

Best of all, we were done by 3 p.m. and we still had a great dinner and an easy cleanup.

Make your next canning day stress-free! And if you have plums, you will LOVE the recipe.

Things We're Loving

  • The Future of Food Summit — Wow! If you are interested in upping your food growing game, then this powerful, 4-day virtual summit is for you! You’ll learn from more than a dozen experts about regenerating the soil and improving health through growing and eating nutrient-dense food.

Watch all of the interviews for FREE for 4 days, November 4-7.

  • Knife Flight — It’s that time of year, with lots of cooking and carving coming up! If you’ve ever struggled (or cut yourself!) with a dull knife, then you know a properly sharpened tool can make cooking so much safer, easier … and faster!

A few months ago, I tried out Knife Flight for sharpening my kitchen knives. They sent specially packaged loaner knives for me to use, plus the packaging to send my knives to them. All I had to do was drop them into my mailbox. The turnaround was really fast. When I got my knives back, they were sharp and much more effective! I'm completely happy :) And I especially love this company because they are a USA family business and they see and touch every order. Use the code HOMESTEADINGFAMILY for 10% off.

  • Madeon Lotion — Do you get those painful winter splits in your fingers? Now that the weather has turned decidedly cold, I’m stocking up on my Madeon Beesilk bar lotions …  my absolute favorite for hands that work hard. This is a bar lotion, which means it only has 3 ingredients. And — you’ll find that absolutely nothing else works as well for dry cracked hands and heels. Use the code HOMESTEADINGFAMILY at checkout and save 15%!

Other Things You Might Need This Week

  • Organize Your Property’s Permaculture Zones - The trick for homesteading cheerfully — and all the way into old age — is to make tasks as easy and efficient as possible through proper permaculture zoning. Organizing your property’s zones is a proven way to lighten the burden on the body and make chores much more pleasant. Learn how to complete your homestead tasks much more easily, with less wasted energy.
  • Pick Your Own Salad - Even in Winter! - If you’ve grown your own greens before, then you know they taste nothing like what you can get from the store. And would you believe that even here, up on the Canadian border, a few tricks make it possible to pick your own salad in February?!? If you love the nutrition and taste you get from home-grown greens, then you’ll definitely want to learn more about how to grow greens all year round!

And that's a wrap for this week. We'll see you on Saturday!
