Old World Skills for a Modern World

If you’re here, chances are you’re already feeling the pull. You’ve seen the Instagram feeds filled with linen aprons, fresh baked bread, baskets of multi-colored eggs fresh from the coop and caramel colored dairy cows. But while these images are inspiring, they can often feel just out of reach. You’re not alone in wondering:

  • “Can I truly do this in my small apartment? Buying land is several years off at least.”
  • “Is it possible to be a homesteader and still have a life? I don’t have endless hours to spend in the kitchen or the garden.”
  • “Can I realistically embrace homesteading on a budget?”

I’m here to tell you that the answer to all of these questions is a resounding YES.

Why I Created the "How to Homestead Anywhere Crash Course"

I didn’t grow up on a farm. I didn’t inherit land or know anything about soil composition, preserving food, or using herbs as medicine. In fact, my journey began on a tiny apartment patio where I grew my very first vegetables. My husband Josh and I were poor as church mice with a growing family to support, limited time, and a pressing need to make it all work.

Trying to mesh these old world skills with modern schedules can be tough. We didn’t grow up seeing homesteading “baked in” to everyday life the way our great grandmothers did.

But over time, I discovered the essential skills, shortcuts, and strategies that allowed me to create a self-sustaining lifestyle wherever I lived. Today, I’m thrilled to share this knowledge with you—so you, too, can create your own slice of homesteading heaven right where you are.

Consider this your official invitation to join me for 5 days on January 5th - 9th from 9 am - 1 pm PT for my second annual LIVE How to Homestead Anywhere Crash Course.

What You’ll Learn in This Five-Day Crash Course

Finding Your Homestead Rhythm

Before you ever plant a seed or fill a jar, you need something far more foundational: a clear, peaceful rhythm you can actually live with. Most new homesteaders come into homesteading already tired. Already stretched thin. Already feeling like they’re behind everyone else who seems to be doing “all the things.”

Day One is where we slow all of that down. Where you take a breath and stop trying to piece together fifty YouTube tutorials and finally learn how to build a homestead life that fits your real life — not the life you wish you had, or the life someone else has on Instagram.

On Day One, I’ll help you:

  • Get out of overwhelm and into clarity — so you know exactly what to focus on first, and what can wait.

  • Set realistic, sustainable homesteading goals that honor your season of life, your energy, and your family’s needs.

  • Build a simple daily and weekly rhythm that keeps you moving forward without feeling like you’re drowning in half-finished projects.

  • Trade perfection for peace — so you stop feeling like you have to “do it all” to do it right.

  • Create a homesteading mindset rooted in calm confidence, not guilt, urgency, or comparison.

You’ll walk away from Day One feeling grounded, steady, and finally clear on how to grow a homestead life that fits your home, your schedule, and your capacity — not one that overwhelms you before you even begin.

Setting Your Homestead Kitchen Up For Success

Your kitchen is the heartbeat of your home, and it becomes the center of your homestead long before the garden, the chickens, or the dairy cow catch up.

Most people try to “homestead” by jumping straight into big projects. But the truth is, the homes that thrive are the ones with kitchens that support the family’s rhythm rather than becoming a place of friction and overwhelm.

On Day Two, we’re going to gently simplify that entire space so it works for you, not against you.

Together we’ll walk through:

• How to source and store bulk ingredients on a budget so you always have the basics you need

• Simple, repeatable pantry-building habits that make cooking easier instead of overwhelming

• How to reduce food waste with small shifts that save you real money

• A no-stress way to plan meals that fits into real life (even your busiest seasons)

• How seasonal eating can cut your grocery bills without sacrificing flavor or nutrition

• How to create quick, nourishing meals from whatever you already have on hand

Day Two leaves you feeling steady in the kitchen, not rushed, not scrambling, not relying on last-minute grocery store runs or takeout nights. You’ll start noticing pockets of peace and predictability forming right where you used to feel overwhelm.

Mastering Indoor & Outdoor Gardening

You do not need acres of land to grow food. In fact, you don’t even need a yard!

On Day Three, I’ll show you how to grow what you can where you can - even if it's just fresh sprouts on your kitchen counter. Because once you learn the basics of tending life from seed to harvest, everything about homesteading becomes more grounded and intuitive.

We’ll cover:

• How to grow sprouts and microgreens inside the house (your own indoor “instant harvest” station)

• Which plants thrive in containers and small spaces

• How to set up a balcony garden or patio garden that actually produces

• My favorite “small space” hacks for tomatoes, herbs, lettuces, and more

• If you do have outdoor space: simple raised beds, small cottage garden layouts, and how to avoid first-year overwhelm

What I want you to feel on Day Three is possibility.

You don't have to replace the grocery store with your garden in year one. Finding a simple, sustainable rhythm that builds over time is what builds resiliency over time!

Everyday Food Preservation—Your Key to Resilience

Most families live in reactive cycles:
“What do we eat? Do we have anything? Do we need to run to the store?”

Those stress loops disappear when you learn even the simplest preservation methods.

Because preservation isn’t just about jams and pickles (although we love both of those things around here!) it’s about creating a pantry that gives you peace instead of panic.

On Day Four, I’ll teach you:

• The preservation methods that are safest, simplest, and most beginner-friendly

• How to build a pantry that truly supports your family - not just looks pretty on Instagram

• How to preserve foods you actually use (so nothing goes to waste)

• How to lower grocery costs by preserving when food is abundant and inexpensive

• How preservation becomes a natural part of your rhythm, not an exhausting once-a-year event• Which tools are helpful, which ones are optional, and which ones you can skip completely

By the end of Day Four, you’ll have the foundation to confidently preserve food that actually feeds your family through busy weeks, tight budgets, winter storms, and all the unpredictable seasons of family life.

Becoming Your Family’s Home Herbalist

Don’t let the word herbalist scare you. Herbal remedies have been used for centuries to help with everything from the common cold to managing stress.

This is wisdom our great grandmothers had ingrained in their minds from a young age, and we can reclaim it for the next generations!

Together we’ll cover:

  • A universal blueprint for using herbs in your home safely and effectively.

  • My personal herbal protocol that I use in my own home with my 11 kids.

  • The remedies I always have stocked in my herbal medicine cabinet.

  • The top herbs every homesteader should have growing in their garden.

  • When to use herbs, when not to, and how to feel confident caring for your family naturally

Herbalism becomes one of the most peaceful parts of your homestead life when you understand the basics. You’ll walk away from Day Five feeling like you’ve taken a truly meaningful step toward caring for your home with calm, grounded confidence.

Let’s Dream Together for a Moment…

Take just a minute to imagine your life on the other side of this crash course. What does it look like for you?

Maybe it’s opening a pantry filled with shelf-stable food you preserved in your own kitchen. Maybe it’s cooking a hearty meal for your family with ingredients you grew in your own garden. Maybe it’s opening your home to those impacted by personal or national disasters because food prices and supply chain disruptions don’t shake you. You have everything you need right at your fingertips.

Maybe it’s the confidence to pull an herbal remedy out of your medicine cabinet when a child comes to you in the middle of the night not feeling well. Maybe your ultimate end goal IS to have a flock of laying hens and a caramel colored dairy cow, but it feels a bit like a pipe dream right now.

Remember that homesteading isn’t about how much land you own, it’s about building a life that YOU have control over. You have everything you need right now to make intentional choices that move you closer to a life of sustainability and resiliency, all you need is a little bit of clarity on the “how!” That’s where I come in.

Because I can confidently tell you based on my own experience, this isn’t just a dream—it’s a reality waiting for you.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Carolyn Thomas

Hi! I’m Carolyn! My husband, Josh, and I live on 40 acres in Idaho with our 11 children where we grow, preserve, and prepare most of our own food right on our property.

As young parents with a quickly growing family and a desire to feed them healthy, whole foods (even on a tight budget) we knew very quickly that we were going to have to figure out how to grow and cook it ourselves... good food was just too expensive!

But we didn’t have anyone around us that we could ask about how to make this homesteading thing work. We felt completely alone and scrambling for answers while dealing with the demands of life.

We didn’t want others to have to go through the same struggles we experienced, so we created Homesteading Family.

As the years have passed we have had an opportunity to speak into the lives of more and more families… And while we are so blessed to get to help others, we also know that this is just the beginning… and now it is time to take the next step.

The How to Homestead Anywhere Crash Course will help you transform your home into a thriving, productive and healthy household.

I can’t wait to see you there!
